Your Omega-3 status – 97% are deficient – are you too?

by Richard Geres / Tuesday, 03 October 2023 / Published in fitness blog

Omega-3 fatty acids, often referred to as the “good fats,” have garnered significant attention in recent years for their numerous health benefits. These essential nutrients are found in certain foods, but supplementation is often needed to reach optimal levels.

In this comprehensive guide, we’ll delve into the incredible advantages of omega-3 fatty acid supplementation and why incorporating them into your daily routine can be a game-changer for your overall health.

97% of people are deficient in Omega-3 Fatty Acids.

The recommended ratio between Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids in our body should be 3:1 or less, but 97% of people do not meet this criteria. A ratio of 3:1 or less is your best chance of keeping your body’s inflammation status as low as possible. Inflammation is responsible for a number of ailments and diseases, including atherosclerosis (narrowing of arteries that leads to heart attacks), arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease and certain types of cancer.

Understanding Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are a group of polyunsaturated fats crucial for maintaining optimal health. The three main types of omega-3s include:

  • Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA): Known for its anti-inflammatory properties, EPA is found in marine sources such as fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, and sardines.
  • Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA): DHA is essential for brain development and function, making it a vital component of cognitive health. It is also found in fatty fish.
  • Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA): This omega-3 is primarily found in plant-based sources like flaxseeds, chia seeds, and walnuts.

Omega-3 fatty acids play a pivotal role in various bodily functions, and their supplementation offers a wide array of health benefits.

The Top Benefits of Omega-3 Fatty Acid Supplementation:

  1. Heart Health:

Omega-3s have a remarkable ability to support cardiovascular health. They can reduce triglycerides, lower blood pressure, and help prevent the development of arterial plaques. Regular supplementation is linked to a reduced risk of heart disease and stroke.

  1. Brain Function and Mental Health:

DHA, a key component of omega-3s, is abundant in the brain and essential for its proper functioning. It supports memory, cognitive function, and mood regulation. Some studies have even suggested that omega-3s can help reduce the risk of age-related cognitive decline and conditions like depression and anxiety.

  1. Inflammation and Joint Health:

Omega-3s possess potent anti-inflammatory properties, making them valuable for individuals with chronic inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis. They can help alleviate joint pain and stiffness.

  1. Eye Health:

DHA is also present in the retina, where it contributes to visual development and the maintenance of eye health. Omega-3 supplementation may lower the risk of age-related macular degeneration and dry eye syndrome.

  1. Skin and Hair Health:

Omega-3s help maintain skin elasticity and hydration. They may also reduce the risk of skin disorders like psoriasis and promote healthy, lustrous hair.

  1. Pregnancy and Infant Development:

Pregnant women who supplement with omega-3s support their baby’s brain and eye development. These fatty acids are crucial during fetal growth, as well as in the early years of a child’s life.

  1. Weight Management:

Omega-3s may play a role in weight management by reducing appetite and promoting fat oxidation. Although not a standalone solution for weight loss, they can be a valuable addition to a balanced diet and exercise regimen.

  1. Cancer Prevention:

Some studies suggest that omega-3s may help reduce the risk of certain cancers, particularly breast and prostate cancers. Their anti-inflammatory properties and ability to inhibit tumor cell growth make them an area of active research.

  1. Immune System Support:

Omega-3s enhance the immune system’s response to infections. They promote the production of immune cells and improve their functioning, potentially reducing the severity and duration of illnesses.

  1. Longevity and Quality of Life:

By supporting overall health and preventing chronic diseases, omega-3 supplementation can contribute to a longer and higher-quality life.

How to Incorporate Omega-3s into Your Diet:

Some foods are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids. These are the most common:

  • Fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines) – rich in EPA and DHA
  • Flaxseeds
  • Chia seeds
  • Walnuts
  • Hemp seeds
  • Edamame
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Algal oil (a plant-based source of DHA for vegetarians and vegans)

However, it’s not easy to obtain sufficient omega-3s solely from your diet. This is where supplementation comes in handy, providing a convenient and reliable way to ensure you get an adequate daily intake

Dosage matters and delivery matters

Many Omega-3 supplements provide dosages that are too small to significantly increase your Omega 6 to Omega 3 ratio. Another factor is fat oxidation, in which case polyunsaturated Omega-3 fatty acids oxidise in the bottle and lose their beneficial properties.

The right way to supplement with Omega-3s.

Step 1: Get tested

Before starting your omega-3 supplementation, test your Omega-6 to Omega-3 fatty acid ratio. This is the only way you will know for certain what your current status is. We offer a unique test to get detailed insight into your current Omega-3 fatty acid levels,as well as other fatty acids.

Step 2: Take a high-dosage, high quality supplement for several months until you reach optimal health ratios.

Step 3: Maintain a healthy Omega-6 to Omega-3 ratio (3:1 or less) by continuing your supplementation long-term.

Enter Zinzino

Zinzino is a Norwegian Supplement brand that I personally use and highly recommend for its quality and the complete solution it offers.

Zinzino provides a simple home testing kit, the Balance test, that allows you to send a small blood sample (just 2 drops of blood) to an established, independent Laboratory, Vitas Analytical Services, based in Olso, Norway.

The BalanceTest provides you with accurate readings of 11 fatty acid levels in your blood and your essential Omega-6:3 ratio with six different health markers. The analysis is independently managed, and the results are completely anonymous, telling you upfront if your body’s Omega nutrients are in balance. The test includes personalized recommendations and guidelines on how to restore the essential Omega-6:3 balance in your body and move forward on your health journey.

The Supplement I personally use and recommend:

BalanceOil+: fish and olive oil in perfect balance with proven results
The scientific formulation inside BalanceOil+ combines a unique fish oil grade with beneficial amounts of Omega-3, along with a scientifically certified measure of olive oil that provides polyphenols, phytonutrients, and Omega-9 in high quantities, and thus contributes to the enhanced oxidative stability of Omega-3 lipids.

The polyphenols bind to the Omega-3s and act as effective antioxidants, preventing the lipids from oxidating. The polyphenols of the olive oil mimic the polyphenols naturally present in fish and transfer the fragile Omega-3 through the body until delivering them securely within the cell membranes. The polyphenols and the marine lipids collaborate in a highly synergetic way, making it possible for the body to safely absorb, adjust, and maintain the Omega-3 levels above the required 8% necessary to achieve an Omega-6:3 balance below 3:1.

The average Omega-6:3 ratio for people not taking an Omega-3 supplement is 12:1 for Northern Europe, 15:1 for Europe, and 25:1 for USA, as revealed by researching the worlds largest database of essential fatty acids, with 600,000+ tests analyzed at the independent laboratory, Vitas Analytical Services. After taking BalanceOil+ products for 120-days, the average ratio in all of these geographical areas is below 3:1.

Ready to take your health to the next level?

Omega-3 fatty acids are considered one of the the strongest anti-inflammatory nutrient available. If taken in the right form and dosage, they can significantly improve your health in the long-term.

Zinzino is a high-quality supplement company that supplies arguably the best Omega-3 supplements in the market.

If your health is important to you and you are eager to to keep your inflammation levels under control, you should focus on optimising your Omega-6 to Omega-3 ratio.
