Don’t let an injury stop you from exercising!
Ever suffered from a knee injury, hurt your shoulder or twisted your ankle?
Such an injury can take time to recover. While we wait for the injury to heal, we often discontinue any physical activity we might have been engaged in. And sadly, in the meantime, the muscles that move that joint, and often the rest of the body lose strength, tone and fitness.
We may even start to regain any weight we might have lost prior to the injury. It takes time to build fitness, but you can lose fitness and gain weight incredibly fast following an injury. It’s a sad reality, but that’s the way our body functions.
Don’t take time off
If you’re recovering from an injury, don’t make the mistake of sidelining your exercise programme completely until you feel 100% recovered. Actually your joint will likely not return to 100% function again, unless you rehabilitate the injury with an appropriate exercise programme.
Professional athletes nowadays commence physiotherapy programmes just days after surgery. New research now shows that injuries heal faster when the body remains physically active, rather than taking long rest periods.
Exercise does magic to our body, and it releases numerous hormones and signalling proteins that improve our health status, ‘turn on’ health promoting genes and just make us feel good. Exercise stimulates blood flow and nutrient exchange that enables injuries to heal faster, and allows you to return to full activity sooner.
We have experience in working with clients that are recovering from injuries or even surgery on the knee, shoulder, ankle, hip, elbow and wrist joints. We also work with clients recovering from muscle tears and soft tissue inflammation.
We continue the recovery process after you complete your physiotherapy
Our rehab programmes serve as a continuation and progression of the physiotherapy programme you followed. Many patients recovering from injuries make the mistake of stopping their activity once they finish their physiotherapy programme. However, at this stage you still have quite a bit of work to do to get your injured joint back to normal function. Our programme usually consists of specific strengthening and stretching exercises for weakened or injured muscles, tendons or ligaments that provide movement and support to a joint.
Our programmes are designed to improve the healing process of the injured joint, while giving the rest of your body a productive and safe workout session. You’ll be surprised to find out how we can work around specific injuries and movement limitations. These workouts will help you regain strength, muscle tone and fitness and your injury will recover faster!
