Need to adopt a more healthy lifestyle?
Our current lifestyle is making it harder and harder to maintain optimum health. We juggle between long hours and stress at work, family commitments and whatever else takes up our time. At the end, there is very little time left for mindful food preparation and exercising. Not exactly a ‘healthy lifestyle’.
Over time, this takes its toll on our body, with consequences to our health. Over 60% of adults in Malta are either overweight or obese! Many suffer from high blood pressure, high cholesterol , high blood sugar (insulin resistance) and excessive waist circumference (a health risk!).
These conditions are referred to as cardiovascular risk factors, since they increase the chances of eventually suffering a heart attack or stroke. They also increase the risk for diabetes and cancer.
Lifestyle modifications can be implemented in small steps. The secret is to make a small change, but apply this daily, until it becomes routine. Then you can tackle the next change. Lifestyle modification is about what you can do regularly in the long-term, not just for a couple of weeks or months. It’s about behaviour change – doing things a bit different, regularly, for the long-haul.
Starting an exercise programme with a personal trainer is an excellent way to commit to a couple of hours of exercise per week. Your commitment to your appointment will make sure you attend your training sessions regularly, and over time you will develop a habit of exercising regularly.
Making changes to your eating habits
